Two Ways to Find Hot Topics For Persuasive Speeches

If you want to make a good speech or presentation, then you've to find hot issues that can be related or added in your topics for persuasive speeches. This is especially important if you're addressing a group of highly educated or skillful prospects and people. So how do you find hot topics for persuasive speeches? Let me enlighten you.

    # 1 Online News Directories

The Internet technology has improved drastically these past few years as it allows information or news to spread around the world instantly and virally. A lot of people are visiting the online news directories to stay alert of current issues that have been plaguing the world. If you relate the latest issues or stories in your speeches, then most probably you can influence your audience or make them get focused and listen to you more. You can find hot topics for persuasive speeches at online news directories such as "CNN" and "BBC". I've personally attended a lot of business speeches and most of the time, I've seen the speaker will relate his speech with something that's been hitting the news headlines. I've to admit that it'll make me to get extra focused to what the speaker has to say next and eventually make me excited and attracted to the topics of the speech.

    # 2 Online Forums

This is my all time favourite place to find hot topics for persuasive speeches. There are a lot of online forums where current or hot issues will be discussed by the members. If you're stuck of ideas for your speeches, then you can check out online forums that are related to the niche market or target audience that you're targeting. Just do a small search with your favourite search engine to find relevant forums that you want. Once you've found one, join the forum and read the famous issues that are being discussed to help you out. You can also start a thread or discussion in a particular forum to ask about the members opinion regarding a particular topic. Collect their feedback to get extra ideas for your topics. However you've to be careful in online forum. Different people have different ideas and opinion regarding an issue. So try your best to not to get involved into anything controversial or it might backfire eventually as you might lose your reputation or banned from the forum.

Let's recap what we've learned in this article:

? Current hot issues can be added in your topics for persuasive speeches so that you can influence or persuade your audience better

? 2 of the famous place to find hot topics for persuasive speeches are "online news directories" and "online forums".

United Nations to appoint alien ambassador

With Middle East peace talks on the brink of collapse and Iran continuing to defy its sanctions, the United Nations is set today to act on another priority: appointing someone to be Earth’s “first contact” for when E.T. phones.
Mazlan Othman, the head of the UN’s little-known Office for Outer Space Affairs (Unoosa), is to describe her potential new role next week at a scientific conference at the Royal Society’s Kavli conference centre in Buckinghamshire.
She is scheduled to tell delegates that the recent discovery of hundreds of planets around other stars has made the detection of extraterrestrial life more likely than ever before – and that means the UN must be ready to coordinate humanity’s response to any “first contact”.
During a talk Othman gave recently to fellow scientists, she said: “The continued search for extraterrestrial communication, by several entities, sustains the hope that some day humankind will receive signals from extraterrestrials.
“When we do, we should have in place a coordinated response that takes into account all the sensitivities related to the subject. The UN is a ready-made mechanism for such coordination.”

How will your employees that runs for Office handle Fox?

Politico  asks an interesting question: "how a news organization can cover the White House hopefuls with so many in Payroll?"

Despite assumptions, this issue is something important. But let's begin by saying that no one has declared a candidacy, which means that this is all hypothetical. Politics suggest that Palin, Gingrich, Santorum, Huckabee are to become candidates, which is an assumption. (Although most have denied it at this time, I have that thinking as a possibility).

But for the sake of history, let's say that they do. For Palin, Gingrich, Santorum and Huckabee  Fox News contracts in question, that more or less prohibit them appearances on other networks without the permission of Fox while still employed by Fox.

Fox has maintained a tight grip and generally not moved. Yet as a business decision, Fox has no errors: pay their people (I am sure) good money to be only on Fox. Want to listen to Palin? Go to Fox. I do not think that this is an error.

The more interesting question is whether any of them chose to run, there is a conflict of interest? The answer is a resounding yes!

Fox has interest in them doing well - once again, that is a thing of business.

But I don't think that Palin, Gingrich, Santorum and Huckabee are stand-up people, and I think that it will end their contracts when it is clear that they will be running for public office.

The surprise is how Fox responded to the politician question: "“Fox, in an e-mail to POLITICO, indicated that once any of the candidates declares for the presidency he or she will have to sever the deal with the network.”

Thus, in the end, isn't this really a problem? General media only wanted to complain about contracts that keep us left in the dark until the official statement. One has to wonder...

Ga. megachurch pastor pledges to fight accusations

    Bishop Eddie Long
LITHONIA, Ga. – The famed pastor of a Georgia megachurch said Sunday that he will fight allegations that he lured young men into sexual relationships, stressing that he'd be back to lead the church the next week.
Addressing a New Birth Missionary Baptist Church sanctuary packed with thousands, Bishop Eddie Long declined to discuss specifics of lawsuits filed against him — or flatly deny the accusations. But he drew thunderous applause when he told his church that while he's not perfect, the picture painted by the allegations is far from accurate.
"There have been allegations and attacks made on me. I have never in my life portrayed myself as a perfect man. But I am not the man that's being portrayed on the television. That's not me. That is not me," he said as applause interrupted him.

Long told the crowd that his lawyers had advised him not to "try this case in the media." While the remarks were short on details of the legal case, Bishop spoke at length about enduring painful situations.
"We are all subject to face distasteful and painful sitauations. Bishop Long, Eddie Long — you can put your name in that blank — will have some bad situations," he said. "The righteous face painful situations with a determined expectancy. We are not exempt from pain, but He promises to deliver us out of our pain."
Long is scheduled to speak again at a 10 a.m. news conference and 11 a.m. service.

    Eddie Fisher dies at 82

    Eddie Fisher dies at 82

Pop idol Eddie Fisher died on Wednesday due to complications from a recent hip surgery, his family announced on Thursday. He was 82. Fisher, father to actress Carrie Fisher, was one of the most successful pop singers of the 1950s. In addition to chart-topping hits, like “Thinking of You,” “Walking Behind You,” and “Oh! My Pa-Pa,” Fisher also had the TV variety show Coke Time with Eddie Fisher and The Eddie Fisher Show. He fell out of the spotlight with the advent of rock’n'roll, though he continued to record well into the 1960s.
Fisher was married five times. He had two children, Carrie and Todd, with his first wife, actress-singer Debbie Reynolds, whom he famously left for second wife Elizabeth Taylor. Carrie Fisher has compared her parents’ messy divorce and father’s re-marriage to Taylor to the modern-day Jennifer Aniston-Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie saga. Fisher was also married to actress Connie Stevens, with whom he had two more children. His fourth marriage, at 47, was to 21-year-old beauty queen, Terry Richard. It ended after 10 months. His fifth (and longest) marriage was to Betty Lin, a Chinese-born businesswoman. She died in 2001.

It's the Law: Government Agencies, Schools and Universities Mark Constitution Day

Schools and universities across the country on Friday
will celebrate the signing of the U.S. Constitution,
a portion of which is seen here.
But plans to commemorate the day at many
federal agencies contacted by FoxNews.com remain unclear
Across the country on Friday, institutions of education -- from the largest universities to the tiniest one-room schoolhouses -- are celebrating Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, offering educational programs about the Constitution of the United States on the 223rd anniversary of its signing.

From Columbia University in New York to the University of Arizona; from Montclair State University in New Jersey to the University of California-Berkeley; in public schools from Los Angeles to Dearborn, Mich., to Portland, Me., schools and universities that receive federal funds are educating students and faculty about the document, signed in 1887, that provides the framework for the United States of America.

They have to. It's the law.

In 2004, at the urging of the late Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, Congress passed a law designating Sept. 17 as "Constitution Day and Citizenship Day."

The day has its origins in 1940, when Congress passed a joint resolution authorizing President Franklin D. Roosevelt to decree the third Sunday of May as "I Am An American Day," recognizing those who had attained American citizenship. That resolution was repealed in 1952, when Congress passed a law moving the date to Sept. 17 and renaming it "Citizenship Day."

    The head of every federal agency must provide each employee with "educational and training materials" concerning the Constitution;

-- "Each educational institution that receives Federal funds for a fiscal year shall hold an educational program" on the Constitution on Sept. 17 each year.

So . . . how are we doing? By all appearances, the law is being obeyed.

At Columbia University -- attended by Founding Fathers Alexander Hamilton and John Jay -- students can pick up a free pocket copy of the Constitution.

They also can visit the university's Rare Book and Manuscript Library, which includes several documents related to constitutional reform, including Jay's original draft of essay No. 5 of the Federalist Papers and letters he wrote to Hamilton and George Washington.

Several events are planned at the University of California-Berkeley, where students have been invited to attend a free seminar on "The Free Speech Movement and the Constitution."

Fairfield University in Connecticut will show a series of videos pertaining to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights; deans and professors at the University of Arizona will review key U.S. Supreme Court cases; students at Morehead State University in Kentucky will participate in SeptemberFest next week to "celebrate democracy" and America; and Harvard University will provide free copies of the Constitution at two libraries on Friday.

Some celebrations of the Constitution have already occurred, including those at Montclair State University, where students began celebrating the event on Tuesday with the stitching of the National 9/11 Flag, as well as expert panel discussions aimed to inform students about the relevance of the Constitution today.

Students also saw a procession of bagpipes, representatives from local fire departments, university police and student veterans take part in the ceremony.

Carolyn Jones, a campus coordinator for the American Democracy Project, which seeks to further engage students politically, attended the event and said feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

"The goal was to help [students] really capture the Constitution as part of their lives today," Jones told FoxNews.com. "It was relevant for our students. It was not in a lecture format but in a presentation format. The feedback that I've gotten has been overwhelming. People learned a lot from the panels, but they also were able to recapture the Constitution."

The president and student body president of Texas A&M University jointly signed a proclamation Thursday in support of Constitution Week in cooperation with the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The school's Constitution Day activities were to kick off Friday afternoon with the playing of patriotic music on the university's carillon, and exhibits focusing on the Constitution will be located all week at three campus libraries.

The University of Phoenix created a Constitution Day website that includes a letter from the school's president on the importance of Constitution Day, links to information on the Founding Fathers and a historical overview of the Constitutional Convention. The website also features a link for students to register to vote.

In Washington, the various departments of the federal government also appear to be in compliance with the law.

All Justice Department employees have been invited to attend a speech -- "If Ours Is a Living Constitution, Whose Job Is It to Keep It Alive?" -- given by constitutional scholar Laurence Tribe, who also serves as the DOJ's senior counselor for access to justice. Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the DOJ's civil rights division, was scheduled to deliver the Constitution Day keynote address at Oberlin College in Ohio on Thursday night.

At the Department of Labor, as she did last year, Secretary Hilda Solis will send an email to all department employees that includes links to constitutional facts and information, to "remind employees" about the anniversary, a department spokesman told FoxNews.com. Other social media elements may be included as well.

Treasury Department workers will receive an email reminding them of the anniversary and to provide them additional resources, spokeswoman Sandra Salstrom said.

In 2006, the the Department of Homeland Security's Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties developed a 25-minute tutorial to remind all DHS employees of the historical context in which the Constitution was written, the basic framework of the Constitution, a description of the Bill of Rights, and quotes from significant American leaders on the importance of the Constitution. The Department makes this tutorial readily available to all employees on Constitution Day.

In addition, DHS leadership is participating in naturalization ceremonies across the country. Secretary Janet Napolitano was in Fenway Park in Boston on Wednesday to naturalize 5,000 new Americans, and additional ceremonies will continue through next week.

The U.S. Postal Service plans to display an American flag at all 34,000 facilities nationwide, as it does every day. "We have no additional plans to recognize or celebrate tomorrow's commemorative date," spokeswoman Joanne Veto said in an email to FoxNews.com on Thursday. She did not respond to further inquiries as to whether educational materials will be disseminated to employees.

The Education Department, in a press release, said its website contains a page "that provides information on additional resources that may be helpful to the educational institutions to assist them with Constitution Day activities, and to increase knowledge about the Constitution: http://www2.ed.gov/policy/fund/guid/constitutionday.html. Educational institutions are not required to report on their Constitution Day activities to the Department."

Other federal entities did not reply to inquiries as to what educational and training materials they plan to give to their employees. Calls to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, which provides material to educate and train federal employees on the Constitution and other matters, were not returned.

President Obama recognized the day as he did last year, with a presidential proclamation released on Thursday that declares Sept. 17 as Constitution and Citizenship Day and Sept. 17 through Sept. 23 as Constitution Week.

"I encourage federal, state, and local officials, as well as leaders of civic, social, and educational organizations, to conduct ceremonies and programs that recognize our Constitution and reaffirm our rights and obligations as citizens of this great Nation," the proclamation read.

MaLinda Sapp funeral was filled with tears, shouts, songs, tributes, including performance by husband gospel star Marvin Sapp

GRAND RAPIDS -- Pastors, local officials and gospel music artists from throughout the country were on hand, amidst tears, shouts, songs, and tender tributes at the "Homegoing Service" for MaLinda Sapp on Thursday at Resurrection Life Church.

MaLinda Sapp, wife of gospel singer and local pastor Marvin Sapp, died last week after an 18-month struggle with colon cancer.
"This is a test of our faith," said Rev. Jesse Jackson, who was one of more than a dozen pastors and evangelists who spoke during the nearly 4-hour service.
"We are pained in the transition, but we rejoice in the destination," he told more than 2,000 mourners.
Several community leaders also spoke, including Grand Rapids Police Chief Kevin Belt and Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra music director David Lockington. Marvin Sapp also performed part of his hit song "Here I Am," which MaLinda, on her death bed, called "her song."
Among gospel music artists who performed in tributes were Israel Houghton, Karen Clark Sheard and Donnie McClurkin.

    Twin Towers: Nine Years Later

    Saturday, September 11, 2010

    The Record

NINE YEARS ago, four hijacked planes on suicide missions destroyed the Twin Towers, damaged the Pentagon and crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. It is not the ongoing military fight against global terrorism that poses a lasting threat to our nation. It is the rising vitriolic rhetoric on American soil by Americans in the name of "9/11" that is endangering our way of life.

Ground Zero from the Air Today
How quickly the reverence shown to those numerals has faded. 9/11. Nine years ago, we stopped, gasped and prayed for the dead and the victims. But time has a way of healing wounds and opening new ones. What seemed impossible nine years ago — using the Sept. 11 attacks for political and personal gain — is becoming the norm.

New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio has used images of the damaged World Trade Center site in his quest to win Tuesday's primary. Lazio has also fed on the anti-Islamic fever that has spread over a proposed Islamic cultural center and mosque two blocks north of Ground Zero.

Meanwhile, Ground Zero itself is a massive construction site. We are supposed to be pleased that One World Trade Center is rising, that work on that national Sept. 11 memorial is well under way, as is the transportation hub and one of three additional commercial towers. And we are pleased that these projects are moving along. But it has been nine years. Nine years and nothing is completed.

Building at this scale is generally a slow business. But some of the delays, while partially attributed to the need to find all human remains at Ground Zero and navigating a complicated maze of underground infrastructure stripped bare, are also due to politics and commerce at its ugliest. Just this summer, New Jersey signed off on a $1 billion Port Authority of New York and New Jersey deal to completely build out the World Trade Center site in exchange for $1 billion to either raise or replace the Bayonne Bridge.

New York developer Larry Silverstein gained control of the Trade Center weeks before Sept. 11, 2001. He was originally responsible for rebuilding the destroyed commercial space. But nothing was getting built – aside from Tower Seven, which was not on the 16-acre site. If it was not for the intervention of the Port Authority, the owner of the World Trade Center, we seriously doubt there would be as much progress as there is today.

At least there is rebuilding at Ground Zero. Across America, it is deconstruction that progresses. Protests against the proposed Islamic center continue. Protests against planned mosques in other regions of the nation grow. And an obscure pastor of a tiny Florida church grabbed the international spotlight by proposing to burn Qurans today.

Next year is a defining anniversary10 years since the attacks. Much of the memorial at Ground Zero should be completed. Perhaps when that occurs, our attention will shift back to remembering those who perished that fateful Tuesday. But today, it is a divided America that marks this ninth anniversary.

We owe the dead and the survivors more. We owe the men and women who risked their health to find survivors and recover human remains guaranteed health care. We owe the families and friends of the victims a dignified place to grieve. We owe the men and women who built America something more than a new World Trade Center. We must restore the America whose values were the real targets on Sept. 11, 2001.

After nine years, it's time to start paying back that debt.

World Trade Center Rebuilding May Finish by 2014, Officials Say

Four office towers, a transit center designed by Santiago Calatrava, a memorial and museum at the downtown Manhattan site of the World Trade Center may be complete by 2014, according to city and state officials.

A landscaped outdoor memorial featuring a walkway through a grove of trees will adorn the site by next year’s 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack, which killed 2,752, said Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum, adjacent to the open plaza, will be completed in 2012, said Bloomberg, who also serves as chairman of the museum.

“It’s very difficult to see progress when the action is mostly negotiations,” Bloomberg said. Nine years is not a long time, considering the complexity of the job, he said.

Google Instant with Bob Dylan. Is Steve Jobs Really Worried?

Google sure knows how to push Steve Jobs' buttons. This advertisement for Google's new instant search system is bound to get under the Apple CEO's skin — and intensify one of the most heated rivalries in tech.

The ad combines a video of Bob Dylan's influential 1965 tune "Subterranean Homesick Blues" with shots of Google Instant, the company's new buttonless search system. It's a mash up that won't sit well with Jobs. The Apple chief has long counted Dylan as an idol and inspiration, once reportedly reading an entire verse of the folksingers lyrics aloud at an Apple shareholder meeting. That recitation was telling: As far as Jobs is concerned, Apple was always supposed to be the culturally resonant, emotionally relevant, vaguely countercultural force in tech. Not Google, with its army of computer science PhDs, its obsession with testing and metrics, and its utterly tone-deaf public pronouncements. Now the Google droids, of all people, are invoking a folk music hero?

They are, and that may well be an intentional provocation. An intense rivalry opened between Apple and Google when the latter's Android smartphone platform squared off against Apple's iPhone. The resulting executive rage manifest itself in an epic fight between Jobs and his Google counterpart Eric Schmidt (a fight followed by a sort of public reconciliation).

Or maybe the Google ad is just flattery by way of imitation. Schmidt is said to have admired Jobs in much the same way Jobs admired Dylan. And he's smart enough to know that, at a time when Google's trying to enter deeper and more profitable relationships with customers, its image should be less about precision engineering and more about connections between people; as much about culture and lines of authority as about technology. Hence, the Dylan spot.

That's not to say the Google ad is up to Apple standards. It riffs on a film originally included in the D. A. Pennebaker documentary Don't Look Back, in which Dylan holds up a series of cards corresponding to lyrics from "Subterranean Homesick Blues." In Google's version, scenes from the original clip are interspersed with matching results on Google Instant. It's not a particularly clever use of the music, nor an original one; imitating the Dylan lyric cards sequence has become fairly hackneyed over the decades. Nor does the spot pack the emotional punch of this year's Google Superbowl ad. Still, it's accomplishment of licensing, at the very least: Dylan isn't much for advertising, the occasional Victoria's Secret and Cadillac spot notwithstanding.

Lord knows, Google can afford him, and any number of other cultural icons. Whether the company should is another matter. Powerful algorithms and A/B tests can accomplish many things on the internet, but accounting for taste is not one of them.

Mark Zuckerberg gets fresh start on Google Instant search

"New Google Instant search is more ... shall we say ... diplomatic."

    By Helen A.S. Popkin

No doubt, one of Google's most valuable contributions to humanity is its auto-fill function.

Wondering what everyone else is wondering about?

Start typing who, what, where, when, why or how into the Google search field. If you're feeling lucky, follow it with a verb. Lickety-split, the top questions most commonly asked by Google users pop up — instant access into the bizarrely awesome zeitgeist experienced by Google users, which lets be honest, is pretty much everyone. For example:

    "Where is..." brings

    Where is Chuck Norris?

    Where is my refund?

    Where is the love?

    Where is my mind?

    "Why does..." brings

    Why does my eye twitch?

    Why does he do that?

    Why does it rain?

Why does my cat lick me?

    You get the idea.

Now, thanks to Google's Instant search, launched Wednesday, you can tap into that zeitgeist 2 to 5 seconds faster, as it starts anticipating what you're going to ask as you type, before you even click a thing. It's actually kind of creepy ... but what are ya gonna do? Use Bing?

    (Msnbc.com is a Microsoft-NBC Universal joint venture.)

A quick tour through Google Instant revealed two more significant changes to the Google's auto-fill. Suggestions for questions you might be asking are now limited to four, instead of 10 amusing possibilities.

More pointedly, old Google isn't afraid to auto-fill the tough question about Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Type "Why can't" into Google Original Recipe, and the first question it offers to search for is "Why can't Mark Zuckerberg learn?"

Ask New Google Instant "Why can't," and the first thing it offers is Google Original Recipe's second question suggestion: "Why can't I own a Canadian?"

    Cue dramatic-looking gopher!

One could play Warren Commission and posit nefarious theories all day ... because it's fun. Most likely however, Google's frighteningly efficient new algorithm is budgeting for noise, something like the way Twitter rejiggered its algorithm so the top trends aren't aways lousy with references to that Justin Bieber kid. And frankly, with Google co-founder Sergey Brin noting that the company focus is on wanting "to make Google the third half of your brain," we've got scarier things to worry about.

Facebook Adds Remote Log-Out Security Feature

Facebook on Thursday added a remote log-out feature that will allow users who accidentally left themselves logged in on a particular device to end those sessions from another location.

"Have you ever borrowed a friend's phone to use Facebook and then forgotten to log out before you handed it back? Maybe you logged in from a public computer, but accidentally walked away with your Facebook session still active," Facebook wrote in a blog post. "Now, you can see if you're still logged in on other devices and immediately log out on those devices from one central control in your account."

The "Account Security" section of your Account Settings page will now include a menu that displays "Most Recent Activity," as well as "Also Active," if your account is signed active in two or more locations.

Facebook will show log-in time, approximate location based on IP address, and browser and operating system. It will also show device name if you have enabled Facebook's log-in notifications feature.

If you notice a location that is unauthorized or you know that the listed location is your friend's cell phone or a public computer from which you forgot to log out, you can click the "end activity" link to the right of the listing to end that session.

"Control isn't just about deciding what you share and with whom you share it; it's also about being able to keep your Facebook login secure," Facebook said.

Facebook said the service is now rolling out gradually to all of its 500 million members.

Google has had a similar remote log-out feature enabled in Gmail since 2008. Earlier this year, Google introduced a feature in Gmail that alerts you at sign-on if Google believes your account has been compromised.

    Gmail Priority Inbox Has Arrived!

While most people have been taking it easy over the summer vacation, Gmail seems to have been working overtime. The email giant is just getting better and better - a new interface, updated undo send and even multiple account login! The latest feature to make it to our inboxes is Gmail Priority Inbox.

The feature hasn’t been fully rolled out yet, so don’t worry if you can’t see it in your account - it hasn’t appeared in mine yet, but as you can see from the screenshots, Tom’s already prioritizing with the best of them!

Gmail Priority Inbox is going to work like this: using technology similar to its anti-spam features, it will automatically identify important emails based on your usual email patterns - what you read first and who you actually reply to. It will then put these emails in a separate part of your inbox, so you can read them first and leave the less important stuff until later.

Even if Gmail Priority Inbox gets it wrong, there is also a feature to mark individual mails as more or less important, moving them in or out of the priority area as appropriate. If this feature works well, it will be huge, especially for high-volume emailers. I can’t wait to try it out, so hurry up Gmail - I want Priority Inbox now don't you?!

If it's good for the goose...Apple Goes Social with Ping

By Mike Shields, Mediaweek at Adweek

Apple dove head first into social media with the launch of Ping, the company’s latest version of iTunes, an offering comparable to Twitter for music lovers.

As expected, the company also unveiled a new version of Apple TV for $99, along with a TV show rental service. Initially, ABC and Fox have agreed to rent individual episodes of their series for 99 cents each.

With Ping, Apple has created a new social network that appears to serve as both a promotional platform for music artists and a music discovery vehicle. Users can elect to follow their favorite bands, and those artists can post photos, videos, album updates and tour dates via the service.

In addition, Ping allows users to follow friends and share information on their own music collections and their opinions on various artists.

There is also a "Recent Activity" feed, which automatically displays the top songs and albums users' friends are listening to or have downloaded recently. However, unlike Facebook or Twitter, Ping is not advertiser supported (iTunes has never carried advertising).

Competition Responds to Apple TV and Ping

Because Apple is entering some new market segments (or, in the case of Ping, some new markets, period) Apple is now a direct competitor to a number of other companies already in the social music and streaming content space.

Boxee, Rdio and Roku have all issued statements in response to Apple's latest moves and what, if anything, it means for the future of those startups.

Apple is describing Ping as a social network for music. It takes a very Facebook and Twitter approach to following friends and artists and is designed to make discovering and sharing new music super simple.

Rdio, a startup created by the founders of Skype, also lists music discovery as one of its core strengths and missions. Of course, unlike iTunes, Rdio is a subscription service that allows users to enjoy on-demand streaming music for $4.99 or $9.99 a month.

This is the statement Rdio sent us in response to Apple's latest social music plans:

"Today's announcement from Apple completely validates Rdio's social approach to discovering music through people," said Carter Adamson, COO, Rdio. "But in our view, sharing a short clip doesn't amount to sharing music and people are still restricted by Apple's pay-per-tune platform."

Apple's Announcement: Yet Another Master Innovation!

Apple announced that it will live stream its product announcement starting today at 10:00 AM Pacific time.

    Viewable only on Apple Gear

The event, which is an invitation only press conference, takes place at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. But if you only have a Windows PC, don't bother to tune in. To watch the event at Apple.com you'll need a Mac running OS X Snow Leopard and Apple's Safari browser or an iPhone, iPad Touch or an iPad running iOS 3.0 or higher, according to Apple.

This is the first time in years that Apple has live streamed an announcement. The company didn't say why it's changing its policy, but at the last big Apple announcement where Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone 4, Jobs had to ask bloggers to log off the WiFi network because the jammed airways didn't leave enough bandwidth for Jobs to show off off the phone's Internet capabilities.

    (Apple's announcement is expected
    to include new iPod models
     and upgrades to Apple TV)
Apple will broadcast the event using its internally-developed HTTP Live Streaming Protocol, which requires either a Mac running Safari on Mac OS X version 10.6, an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or higher or an iPad.[...] The HTTP live streaming protocol is a feature of the latest version of Apple's multimedia player and framework, QuickTime X. The new protocol lets users stream audio and video over HTTP. This makes things easier for broadcasters, who can use a standard Web server instead of a special media server to stream in almost-real time.

Check if you can see the stream using this HTTP Live sample stream. MacRumors has a full list of the requirements, as well as information on workarounds so that you can access the video.

There are rumors that Apple may be unveiling new versions of the iPod Touch and iPod Nano, as well as updates to Apple TV
