America’s big cities show big racial divides

With the latest census data, digital cartographer Eric Fischer takes a look at the racial breakdown of America’s biggest cities. Here’s what Washington, D.C.‘s breakdown looks like:

Each dot represents 25 people; red represents White, blue represents Black, green represents Asian, orange represents Hispanic.
The nation’s capital has a clear east-west divide between whites and blacks.  The only dense patch of red dots on the eastern side represents the Capitol Hill neighborhood and the broad white spaces are uninhabitable areas like the Potomac River, the National Mall (in the middle) and Rock Creek Park (at the top).
